Böse Fahrzeugbau GmbH improves its coating process with MM31®
Since 2019, the use of chromium-containing products like primers has been prohibited and is no longer offered by paint manufacturers. These primers were known for their excellent corrosion resistance and were also used by Böse Fahrzeugbau. After the prohibition, Böse had to switch to a chromium-free system. It required a tremendous effort to transition from the familiar system with its known advantages and accumulated experiences to a new coating system and to achieve the same quality level. Learning curves with negative experiences were inevitable during this process.

In early 2021, Böse switched to the paint supplier PPG, which, due to a cooperative partnership, also gave AD Chemicals the opportunity to present its product portfolio. AD Chemicals had the final piece of the puzzle with its chemical pretreatment MM31® to once again deliver top-quality results. AD Chemicals’ product could be seamlessly integrated into the existing coating process. MM31® is a one-step chemical pretreatment that significantly improves.
About Böse Fahrzeugbau
Fahrzeugbau Heinz Böse GmbH is a renowned, medium-sized family business based in Eslohe-Reiste, Sauerland. The company specializes in the production of high-quality vehicle body systems, particularly for beverage logistics. In this niche, Böse is the market leader in Germany. The company is known for its innovative and sustainable products for a wide range of customers, including specialists in beverage logistics, transport companies, mineral water suppliers, breweries, and beverage retailers. The foundation for Böse’s success lies in the continuous optimization of the coating process and the expansion of its range with innovative vehicle body systems. Böse’s systems are manufactured in-house using the best materials, ensuring high quality, safety, and long lifespan. Due to their commitment to quality, Böse has earned a strong reputation in the industry.
Böse manufactures over a hundred trailers per year, with the coating process, consisting of mechanical pretreatment (sanding) followed by wet coating, being entirely conducted in-house.
Collaboration with PPG and introduction of AD Chemicals
In late 2021, Böse chose PPG as their new paint supplier in their quest for quality. PPG reported on their collaboration with AD Chemicals, a Dutch provider of chemicals for metal surface pretreatment. AD Chemicals is becoming increasingly known in the German market for the chemical pretreatment of trailers and vehicle body systems.
MM31® combines mechanical and chemical pretreatment. Solely mechanical surface treatment only ensures good paint adhesion but does not provide corrosion-resistant properties. By applying MM31®, a conversion layer is created—an inorganic coating formed through chemical interaction with the metal itself. This layer improves corrosion protection and provides good adhesion for organic coatings (powder coating, wet paint, or adhesive).
Knowledge exchange with Spuiterij Munsters, paint shop in the Netherlands
During the qualification process of MM31®, Fahrzeugbau Böse was able to experience the practical applicability of MM31® at AD Chemicals and PPG partner “Spuiterij Munsters” in the Netherlands. Spuiterij Munsters has been using MM31® for many years in an automated line with painting robots, particularly for sliding floor trailers. This visit was a great opportunity for Fahrzeugbau Böse to gain knowledge, insights, and assess the quality of MM31®. Thorsten Lossau, head of the paint shop at Böse, says: “The collaboration with AD Chemicals is exceptionally good. AD Chemicals and PPG have worked together with us to find a very good solution that meets our expectations for stable quality. This was a team effort, and we can once again rely on the best quality in our painting work. Therefore, we look to the future with full confidence.”
A future without corrosion issues
Böse has now been using MM31® from AD Chemicals and the new PPG paint system for almost two years and concludes that quality compromises are a thing of the past. With the new system, users of Böse’s vehicle body systems can expect a long lifespan.
