Dilute 1:1 with water or apply undiluted
SurfClean RC is a ReCoat Activator for existing paint layers. The product cleans, softens and reactivates the surface in preparation for recoating, overpainting and refinishing. SurfClean RC has been developed for trucks, trailers, equipment, appliances, machine housings and industrial objects where the existing paint layer is technically intact and needs to be incorporated into a new coating build up.
An important application is the preparation of parts where mechanical sanding is difficult, time consuming or practically almost impossible. Examples include profiled trailer components, structural parts, edges, corners, weld seams, recessed areas, machine frames and complex shaped surfaces. In these situations, SurfClean RC supports efficient chemical surface pretreatment before overpainting.
SurfClean RC in brief
- ReCoat Activator for existing paint layers

- Cleans, softens and reactivates the surface before professional overpainting
- Suitable for use on powder coatings and liquid paint systems
- Practical for parts where sanding is difficult or almost impossible
- Developed for trucks, trailers, equipment, appliances, machine housings and other industrial objects
SurfClean RC is a specialised ReCoat Activator for existing paint layers. The product has been developed as a chemical surface pretreatment for professional recoating, overpainting and refinishing processes. SurfClean RC cleans, softens and reactivates existing painted surfaces before overpainting. In this way, the product supports an efficient new coating build up when the existing paint layer is technically intact and suitable for recoating.
RC stands for ReCoat: applying a new coating onto an existing paint layer, without full paint removal always being necessary.
For recoating, overpainting and refinishing
When overpainting existing paint layers, surface preparation is decisive for the final result. An existing coating may be contaminated, closed, aged or insufficiently active for a new paint layer.
SurfClean RC has been developed for situations where the existing paint layer remains in place, but needs to be made suitable again for further coating build up. The product combines cleaning and surface activation in one process step. After application, the surface must be rinsed thoroughly with water.
When sanding is difficult or almost impossible
In many recoating and refinishing processes, mechanical sanding is not always easy to carry out. Parts of trailers, machines, equipment and industrial structures often contain edges, corners, profiles, recessed sections or hard to reach areas. Especially in these areas, uniform mechanical preparation is labour intensive and sometimes hardly feasible in practice.
SurfClean RC offers a chemical process step that cleans, temporarily softens and reactivates the existing paint surface. This prepares the surface for a new paint layer, without the need to remove the entire existing coating.
This makes SurfClean RC especially relevant for objects with complex geometries, large surfaces or parts where manual sanding requires a lot of time or is insufficiently reproducible. In many practical situations, SurfClean RC can help to reduce sanding work, improve pretreatment of hard to reach areas and make the recoating process more efficient.
SurfClean RC does not replace the full mechanical pretreatment process in every case. The correct use depends on the condition of the existing paint layer, the new coating system and the process parameters. AD therefore recommends always assessing SurfClean RC within the complete coating system.
Not a paint stripper, but a ReCoat Activator
SurfClean RC is not a conventional paint stripper. The product is not intended to fully remove paint layers, but to prepare existing paint layers for a new coating layer.
Where a paint stripper is designed for paint removal, SurfClean RC focuses on the controlled preparation of existing paint layers before overpainting.
SurfClean RC supports:
- Cleaning of the existing painted surface
- Temporary softening of the paint film
- Reactivation of the existing coating
- Chemical preparation of areas that are difficult to sand
- Preparation before overpainting, repainting or overcoating
- Adhesion of the new paint layer within a suitable coating system
In this way, SurfClean RC fits professional processes where the existing paint layer is technically suitable to be incorporated again into the coating build up.
Applications
SurfClean RC has been developed for professional users who recoat, repair or renovate existing painted objects.
Typical applications include:
- Trucks and trailers
- Agricultural machinery and construction machinery
- Machine housings
- Appliances and equipment
- Industrial structures
- Coated metal parts
- Objects with existing powder coating layers
- Objects with existing liquid paint layers
- Rework or repainting in production environments
- Renovation of existing coating systems
The product is relevant for damage repair companies, truck refinishing, industrial paint shops, OEM maintenance processes, contract coaters and specialised coating companies.

Application within your coating process
SurfClean RC is used as a preparatory step before overpainting or overcoating existing paint layers. The correct application depends on the condition of the existing paint layer, the contamination, the new coating system and the process conditions. SurfClean RC can be diluted 1:1 with water or applied undiluted.
For a reliable result, AD Chemicals recommends always assessing SurfClean RC within the complete coating system. Important process factors include application method, contact time, processing temperature, drying time, rinsing with water, compatibility with the existing coating and connection to the new paint layer.
Practical testing and process advice
Every existing paint layer is different. That is why AD Chemicals supports customers in assessing SurfClean RC within their own recoating, overpainting or refinishing process.
Our specialists can advise on the correct application, process parameters and evaluation of the final result.

One step pretreatment
AD Chemicals supplies a range of chemicals that can be easily implemented in traditional “mechanical” pre-treatment processes to improve cleanliness of the metal surface or enhance corrosion protection and paint adhesion properties.
MM31®
MM31®, Multi-purpose, Multi-metal. The product combines the worlds of mechanical and chemical pre-treatment. MM31® creates a chromium-3 based protective conversion layer, which is formed on the metal.
Starter MM
Suitable for: aluminium, galvanised steel and steel, Starter MM is the solution of choice for cleaning metals together with MM31®. It effectively removes oxides, welding scale and light milling scale, can be applied at mild temperatures (20–35°C) and is pH neutral.
Metal Cleaners
AD Chemicals offers a specialised range of metal cleaning products, including powerful solvent based cleaners and water based alternatives.
