PrimeCoat® Z83x series products are water-based functional coatings purposely developed to improve corrosion resistance of galvanised steel and other zinc-alloyed coatings. Additional properties of the PrimeCoat Z83x series are: reduction of the friction of the metal surface in forming operations and improved bonding properties.
PrimeCoat® Z83x products are based on trivalent chromium chemistry and does not contain hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) nor fluorides. Galvanised steel sheet treated with a PrimeCoat® Z83x product, as a TOC, is not sensitive for finger prints and is not easily affected by (alkaline) cleaning. Typical galvanized steel surfaces that will have advantage of this PrimeCoat coating are: standard zinc, electrogalvanized zinc, galvalume, galvannealed, magnesium-aluminium-zinc alloys, alusi and galfan.
Metal coated with PrimeCoat® Z83x series combines excellent tribological, post-painting and adhesive bonding properties on the metal surface. Below graph shows the expected properties at different coating weights compared with a standard Cr(VI) passivation.
Passivation and TOC with one single product (modular system)
Unique aspect about the PrimeCoat® Z83x series is that the products can be used as a Passivation and TOC treatment depending on the coating weight. At a lower coating weight the products enable more passivation type such as stamping and forming with oils and emulsions, welding lubrication and paint adhesion. At a higher coating weight it will enable TOC properties for dry forming operations.

Passivation
‘White rust’ the enemy of zinc coated steel strips, is in itself a form of corrosion that occurs during storage and is unacceptable for critical applications in, white goods, construction and other industries.
Pre-treatments
Durability and extended end-use life are demands that consumers take for granted and of which they expect continuous improvement year on year. Paint adhesion and corrosion resistance are critical factors in keeping end-use applications in a condition that is expected to remain in place for their usable life time.
Thin Organic Coatings
Thin Organic Coatings (TOC’s) are applied in a continuous process to hot dip galvanized steel strip and other metal substrates, and can offer a wide range of benefits from anti-fingerprinting to improving, forming and enabling enhanced corrosion protection.
Cleaners and specialty additives
Oils and greases used during processing as well as other forms of surface contamination must be removed. This can be achieved using either acid or alkaline based cleaners depending on the nature of the contamination and the type of metal substrate.
Lubricant boosters
Booster lubricants reduce the wear and tool pollution during pressing of metal sheets.
