PrimeCoat® Z80x series are high performing chemical products from AD Coil Coating Technologies B.V. PrimeCoat chromefree passivation products have been developed based on an in-depth knowledge of customers’ production processes and meet or exceed all cricitical demands.
PrimeCoat® Z800xx products are water-based functional chemical passivations purposely developed to improve corrosion resistance of galvanised steel and other zinc based alloys. Additional properties of the PrimeCoat Z80x series are: reduction of the friction of the metal surface in forming operations and improved bonding properties.
PrimeCoat® Z80x- products are based on phosphates and do not contain hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) or other form of the element chromium. PrimeCoats can replace traditional Chromium based passivations. PrimeCoats are free of SVHC substances. A PrimeCoat treatment ensures excellent appearance, even at higher layer weights. Other features are good paint adhesion and lubrication to reduce galling in deep drawing operations.
Typical galvanized steel surfaces that will have advantage of the PrimeCoat® Z80x-products are: standard zinc, electrogalvanized zinc, galvalume, galvannealed, magnesium-aluminium-zinc alloys, alusi and galfan. Metal coated with PrimeCoat® Z80x is combining excellent tribological, post-painting and adhesive bonding properties on the metal coatings mentioned above.
Below graph shows the general properties compared with a standard Cr(VI) passivation.
“PrimeCoat® Z80x-series, over 10+ years production experience with Cr-free. PrimeCoat, the most sold Cromefree passivation in Europe, a leading technology”
Other properties:
- Excellent corrosion resistance, ASTM B117 NSS
- Condensation resistance (Humidity) that outperforms competition
- Forming
- Makes roll forming and deep drawing easy
- Compatible with full oils and drawing emulsion
- No discoloration of the surface
- Outperforms the market standard for passivations in dry-forming operations with lower punch force during forming operations
and increased blank holder force
- Good bonding and post paintability properties
Modular system Z80x series
PrimeCoat® products are modular. This means that each product can be tailored to specific customer needs. By changing the product concentration or by adding certain specialty additives specific product properties can be enhanced while maintaining a good overall quality on the other parameters. At a higher application concentration, more than 50%, the passivation can be upgraded to a TOC, enabling:
- Improved corrosion resistance
- Improved lubrication
- Anti-fingerprint properties

Passivation
‘White rust’ the enemy of zinc coated steel strips, is in itself a form of corrosion that occurs during storage and is unacceptable for critical applications in, white goods, construction and other industries.
Pre-treatments
Durability and extended end-use life are demands that consumers take for granted and of which they expect continuous improvement year on year. Paint adhesion and corrosion resistance are critical factors in keeping end-use applications in a condition that is expected to remain in place for their usable life time.
Thin Organic Coatings
Thin Organic Coatings (TOC’s) are applied in a continuous process to hot dip galvanized steel strip and other metal substrates, and can offer a wide range of benefits from anti-fingerprinting to improving, forming and enabling enhanced corrosion protection.
Cleaners and specialty additives
Oils and greases used during processing as well as other forms of surface contamination must be removed. This can be achieved using either acid or alkaline based cleaners depending on the nature of the contamination and the type of metal substrate.
Lubricant boosters
Booster lubricants reduce the wear and tool pollution during pressing of metal sheets.
